Repertoire

 

The table below illustrates what types of drums and their sizes are used by each timpanist for various periods of the orchestral repertoire, with specific reference to major composers of each period.


As can be seen, some timpanists always play the same type of timpani, regardless of the composer or the period of the work, while others have a wide variety of drums at their disposal, and make specific choices for each period of music, sometimes even differentiating between the earlier and later works of some composers.
